The young man Alexander Chatsky comes back to Moscow and falls in love with Sophia Famusova. But she falls in love with her father's secretary – Molchalin. Chatsky openly criticizes the customs of Moscow noble society, so this causes dissatisfaction among his acquaintances. Sophia, offended by Chatsky's mockery, spreads a rumor about his craziness - the society believes in it. Disappointed in Sophia and the society, Chatsky leaves Moscow.
